​Crown reduction, from the word itself, means trimming down the height or spread of the crown of a tree. This is done for a number of reasons but primarily to avoid trees from sticking out into the road or allowing more light to enter a residential or commercial area. In some cases, it is performed in order to make the tree more adaptable to its surroundings.

Crown raising on the other hand, involves cutting off the lowest portions of the tree to provide a clearance for structures such as walls, buildings, and sidewalks. It is also performed on trees where crowns are much lower than normal. With that said, it can also be used as an aesthetic tool to make one’s landscape look more mature.
